Easy Child Skirt Tutorial

After making skirts for myself I knew that I could whip up some for Mrs. Rooster's daughter.  These are soooo easy.  I didn't use a pattern but I have some what of a tutorial but not a picture by picture tutorial.  I kinda stink at giving tutorials.  Instructions at the end of post.

Aren't these so stinking cute!  (Apparently, peace signs are the new in thing for 9-10 year olds.)

Okay, here is my attempt at a tutorial:

1) Essentially you are going to start with a rectangle.  Like above.

2) The length (height) will be from the child's waist to their knee.  Leave some allowance for the elastic and the hem.

3) The width of the fabric will be as wide as your child's front and back plus a some extra depending on how full you want the skirt.

4) Before I sew the ends together, I like to iron my elastic hem as well as my bottom hem, then sew the two ends together.  (The picture really helps on this step.)  That seam from the two ends will be the back of the skirt.  Ironing before you sew makes it easier because it isn't connected at the ends.

5) Re fold the elastic and bottom hem, possibly pinning for sewing depending on your sewing skills.  Sew up hems.  On the elastic hem, you are going to sew on top of each fold (Does that make sense?)

6) Now it is time to add elastic.  You are going to rip open that back seam so the elastic can go inside there.  Add a safety pin to your elastic so you can get it through the two seams.

Easy Skirts

A while back my Mom came up and we sewed up some skirts. Perfecting "just the right skirt" is crucial because I really want a pair of knee high boots. My Mom is fabulous, because she is going to buy me some!! Yay!! 

We used New Look pattern, # 6147.  The only modification is the super wide elastic.  Elastic is 3" thick.  I like the wide elastic because it holds in the tummy a little, instead of cutting into your tummy. 

I definitely have some junk in my trunk, so it takes 1 yard of  60" fabric and 1 3/4 yards of 45" fabric.  Most of the silky prints are 60" & costing around $16 or less for a yard, but if you catch sales and use coupons; then you can get a skirt for under $10!  Which is totally a DEAL! It doesn't get better than that!

Follow the yardage usage from the pattern for your first item, then if you want to cut back on what it recommends do so on the second item.
 
Here are two skirts completed.  King did take a pic of me in one, but I looked stupid, cause I was "posing."  So on the hanger is as good as it gets.  The blue one is kinda of a blah color, but that was the tester fabric since it was cheap.

Here are the rest of the fabrics that were in the bottom of my fabric container; so it's like free skirts!!  Most of them are plain jane colors but my style is jazzing up my outfits with colored shoes, handbags, and lots of accessories.  We will be having another sewing marathon soon.  Fabrics call my name . . .  thus, I have added to the collection of "to be sewn" since this picture has been taken.

Childrens Art Smock

Art smocks are on the school supply list this year.  One of my co worker's daughter is a total mini diva and refused to wear "that" art smock she saw in the store.  The mom is very smart and asked me make her daughter one.  She request black, red, and blue with some bling.  She ordered, I delivered.  It turned out to be super cute!  I didn't even have to use a pattern!! I am awesome! (Sorry, had to toot my own horn for a moment.)

Jazzed Up Notebook

I totally LOVE school supplies and wish that I had a good reason to buy some . . . .  like kids or going to school.  Oh wait! Heck no! To both of those!  No children for King and I just yet, and I barely made it through Texas A&M.  My motto: D for diploma!!

However, a small notebook is always in my purse.  Of course, I couldn't leave it like it was.  Added a cute flower makes it so super fabulous!

Vinyl & Water Bottles

My boss and his family have recently become cyclists.  And when I say family, I am talking about husband, wife, children, aunts, uncles, cousins and everyone else.  They are so "Beaver Cleaver"  None the less, they are a great family.  So when I spotted these water bottles for a $1, I knew I had to jazz 'em up.   Only used vinyl and ribbon!  (Yeah, I didn't save this idea, I just remembered it, but didn't remember the blog.  Craftomatic, maybe?) Maybe I can start working out so I can make myself one! baaahahahahha! Yeah right!

Thank You Capris

Since Mrs. D gave me two sock monkey items, I wanted to sent her a thank you gift.  She has seen me in several pairs of lounging capris and always says that she needs to make herself some. Mrs. D will never get around to it; her "to-do" list is a mile longer than the rest of ours.  I whipped up two pairs for her. 

I really wanted this to be a tutorial but I was at King's Dad's house sewing these up & totally forgot.  Here is a picture of the pattern that I used; the pattern number is B5204 by See & Sew (Butterick's cheap-o line.).  Sewing up cotton lounging pants with an elastic waste band is super easy for the beginner sewer.  

Package up with a homemade card and your friend will think you are amazing!
